Pre-assessment: at the beginning of the year or topic give directed reflection time to assess what the students already know and what they would like to know. Teachers can then use this information to inform their planning creating lessons that students will be engaged in.

Purple progress pen

When staff are marking a student’s work use a purple pen to highlight key things you want them to act on. The teacher for example will pose a question to the student , e.g. why did this happen? Whenever the students see purple in their book they know they have to respond to the question.
