The Girls into STEM project is a pilot mentoring and work experience programme for BT, Ericsson, 02 and Vodafone who want to come together and help encourage young women to think about careers in the STEM sector and to provide them with employability skills development.

In January GirlsTalk London’s CEO Vanessa Sanyauke came into St. Michael’s to promote the project and recruit, looking to source 20 students from the 6 schools involved in the programme. Students were invited to apply.

7 of our Year 12 students were successful in their application- by far the biggest group from any of the schools involved in the project. Well done to Megan Porter, Saffron Mustafa, Olivia Bienkowska, Mercy Frimpong, Victoria Nwaesei, Manuela Rosero and Zoe Ubom!

The project features an 8 session mentoring programme for female students in Year 12  from March 2016 through to October 2017. Each successful applicant is matched up with a mentor from one of the 4 businesses from various departments and levels. The mentoring and work experience programme aims to provide support to students on employability and further educational skills. Also, opportunities to visit and do internship in one of the telecommunications companies are offered.

The project launch took place in the media suite at the BT Tower, before moving upstairs to the 34th floor. The students enjoyed the revolving floor and amazing views of the city at night while talking to their mentors.
