Oxbridge and Medicine

This year eight St Michael’s Sixth Form Students have applied for medical degrees or to study at the prestigious Oxford or Cambridge universities. Mercy Frimpong, our joint-Head Girl, is an aspiring medic, as is Diego Casa-Quispe, applying to King’s and St. George’s; and Vanessa Ntow has applied for Foundation medicine. Mercy recently attended a NHS policy work group by invitation of the NHS at King’s College; discussing public relations and work experience in the state sector.

Victoria Nwaesei, also our joint Head Girl, has applied to Cambridge to study Economics; and Alex Johnson and Thomas Mulligan to study Law at Oxford. Emily Bryne has also applied for History at Hertford College and Jake Fernandes, with five grade A’s at AS level, has applied to St Anne’s, Oxford to study Computer Science. Ryan Pitaluga has applied to Imperial College to study Biochemistry.

We wish them all very good luck and recognition of their talents!

Several of these Students were graduates of the Floreat Oxford programme run by Balliol College at Oxford. Recruiting from across Southwark schools, the college selected Students to work with their staff to gain the experience of working at university level in an Oxford-style environment. Students were given an academic reading list and asked to read each week for a seminar. They were taken through aspects of the Oxford Thinking Tests; and they were invited to a week-long summer residence working with Teachers and Professors at Balliol on research essays. Alex, Olivia, Pamela, Emily, Holly and Zoe all graduated from the programme in August 2016. Ryan also spent a week in residence at Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he shadowed an undergraduate in Natural Sciences.

St Michael’s and The SSLP

As part of the Southwark Schools Learning Partnership, Students from St. Michael’s were recently invited to Dulwich College to hear speakers from Universities around the world, including Australia, New Zealand and The Netherlands. Last year, for the first time, St Michael’s sent a Student to study in Holland at TU Delft, one of the world’s leading providers for his course. Omar Shehata-Mauri. who achieved A*AAAB in his five A levels, has taken up a place studying Aeronautical Engineering this Autumn; and will return to St Michael’s before Christmas to speak of his experiences studying at Tu Delft and living in The Netherlands.

This October saw over 20 St Michael’s Students attend the foreign Universities presentations at Dulwich. Stafi Samaki who went to see about Amsterdam, Den Haag and Rotterdam universities on Friday night, 22nd October commented “I’m very glad I went. It opened up a whole range of possibilities and made them sound very exciting! I am seriously considering study abroad alongside study in The UK when I apply next year.”

Our students meet employers volunteering to make them Career Ready

After a rigorous interview process, ten students from St. Michael’s were successful in their applications to the Career Ready Southwark programme 2016. The programme will run this year with students from three schools: St Michael’s Catholic College, Bacon’s College and City of London Academy, and the students are the first group to take part in the employer-led careers programme, as part of the new borough-based cluster.

The group and their parents met with volunteers from employers in the borough, and across the Capital, for the first time on Tuesday 1 November . St Michael’s hosted and the key note speech was given by The Deputy Mayor of Southwark, Charlie Smith.

The launch event brought together the young people who have been selected for the programme with the employers who will be volunteering as mentors, offering Master Classes and workplace visits and even providing paid internships – all of which aim to prepare the students for their future careers.

Head of Programme at St. Michael’s, Mr Smith said: “This is an exciting moment for our students and we’re looking forward to hosting other young people from across the borough as we kick off the programme. Having the chance to work directly with real employers not only gives these students a priceless insight into industry but will also do much more – it will help to increase their confidence interacting with successful role models and most importantly show them that that world is for people like them as well.

“It’s fantastic to have their parents join us for this launch event so they can understand more about the programme but also meet the employers who will be supporting their children and hear directly from them about the types of job opportunities that are available.”
