On Monday 14th November, 17 pupils from Years 9-11 were taken to the London Jazz Festival by the Music Department to experience world-class performances by the San Francisco Jazz Collective.

The concert took place in the evening at the Cadogan Hall in Sloane Square and was broadcast live for BBC Radio 3.

The music was very engaging for all, despite the challenge of listening to contemporary jazz being a new experience for the pupils. The theme was the music of Michael Jackson, played in a jazz context and all pupils commented on how exciting it was to hear the virtuosity and dexterity of the performers.

After the concert, pupils met the band and had the opportunity to have photographs taken with members of the group. A CD was also purchased by the Music Department, of their music performed in the concert and the musicians signed the album cover for us.

“This concert has opened my eyes to the world of jazz and I will be listening to more artists in this genre for inspiration in the future and it was a priveledge to meet David Sanchez, one of the world’s greatest alto saxophone players!” Oscar Asewando. Yr.10

“It gave me the chance to experience live performing by jazz musicians that had composed their own interpretations of Michael Jackson’s songs. It was a magical experience” Sophia Monteza-Kwokova. Yr.9
