Year 12 at the Royal Geographical Society

page

On Wednesday 3rd February, year 12 geography students were privileged to attend the Royal Geographical Society Study Day.

The day consisted of several lectures which enabled us to gain up to date knowledge about a range of subjects.

The first lecture was about Energy. Even though we are not studying this topic, we enjoyed learning from an engaging speaker. We learnt about fracking, energy prices around the world and the energy mix of different countries. It was interesting to broaden our geographical world view.

The second lecture (it was actually fun!) enabled us to gain information from a real-life geographer who had experienced collecting data on the Mississippi River. We hadn’t considered how much impact sediment along the river bed contributes to flooding downstream. We also learnt about the in depth causes of the recent floods in the UK.

Our final subject-based lecture was about Population. This was essential and we were able to recap on what we had studied before Christmas. We learnt about lots of up to date statistics and current trends in population in the UK.

We all feel more confident in our subject matter as well as exam technique as we had a short lecture about time management and exam skills.

It was a great day out and we all found it really useful!
