The Liberty
Schools Conference

Year 13 History Students were able to go to Dulwich College for a Liberty Conference; looking at Human Rights. Leading Human rights lawyer, Shami Chakrabarti CBE, gave students an insight to the particular articles in the declaration, and the rights that are attached to them which I found particularly thought-provoking. Chakrabati stated how many rights within the declaration were limited and could be overruled by domestic governments leading to injustice within certain countries- consequently leading us to question the society we live in today. Later in the day students had to apply this theoretical knowledge to scenarios that occur in our society. Each scenario was an example of Human Rights infringements and students had to identify these rights and also discuss what they mean to society. This then sparked debate amongst the group on a number of issues including the views of the current government on immigration as well as foreign policy within the middle-east. Overall I feel the day was insightful as we were exposed to a number of different opinions and we were also able to express our own. Finally,  it gave us a chance to understand the Declaration of Human rights individually and obtain a broader understanding on the limitations of the rights that we have as citizens of the United Kingdom.
